NOTE: This would be so another remote office or if needed, a windows client or Linux client access the company files via a dropbox or google drive account. This would then point to the iSCSI Local drive and re-publish the data to dropbox or google drive Use a regular dropbox or Google Drive account & install on the Mac Mini server. Then NIC Card in Mac Mini connect to regular network using regular Data network subnet.Ĭreate all data storage on the attached iSCSI Drive. Directly connect to Synology NAS (LACP Bond) using IP address. Use BOTH Thunderbolt connectors using TB to 1GBE adaptor. Volume1 - to pull down ALL their existing Dropbox data Plan was to use Synology DiskStation 5-bay unit. Recently went 100% MAC's as their locations (Real Estate). They're building out a new office location which I'm taking care of the network setup and wifi and servers. Trying to get a customer of mine AWAY from dropbox, as they're essentially using it as distributed file system between their office locations. Products include Evo, SANmp, globalSAN iSCSI Initiator and globalSAN Xtarget Storage Server.Looking into some opinions here. The company offers proven software and hardware solutions for digital artists working in production companies, studios, and corporate media production. Studio Network Solutions (SNS) is a leading developer and provider of technologies for production storage, networking and workflow efficiency for the media and entertainment industries. Xtarget Storage Server is available immediately for $899 USD.įor more information, visit SNS at NAB 2012 in booth SL13207 and in its “workflow ecosystem” partners’ locations: SL11509 (Square Box Systems), SL10508 (Cache-A), and SL9109 (Marquise Technologies). A 14-day trial can be installed by downloading the globalSAN package. GlobalSAN Xtarget is a new component of the globalSAN iSCSI Initiator for OS X. The common use will be for multiple users to share common pools of storage, so Xtarget is compatible with Xsan, iSANmp, and other similar sharing software. It can be used with FireWire, Thunderbolt, USB, eSATA, Fibre Channel, and SAS disks. Xtarget is compatible with any Intel Mac running OS X 10.6.8 or Lion. You can even present your Xtarget disks to the cloud for remote users.” “For example: with Xtarget, a Mac Mini, and a few pounds of hardware, you can have a multi-user SAN that travels with you to the field, hotel, and other on-location work. “Xtarget can present just about any local storage over iSCSI, but in fact, Xtarget is proving to have use cases above and beyond what would be considered for a traditional SAN,” states Ryan Stoutenborough, President of Studio Network Solutions. “The improvement to our workflow has been massively enhanced. “With Xtarget and iSANmp, we turned our Mac Mini and Promise Thunderbolt array into a production SAN for our FCP X suites,” states Christopher Mattock, President of Flow Motion, Inc. The driving benefit of Xtarget is that it enables customers to quickly create a SAN using components they’re likely to already own, thus saving time and money yet still getting the performance and workflow benefits of a typical SAN.Ĭustomers quickly understand the value in building a SAN with hardware they already have. Users can connect Thunderbolt, USB, and FireWire DAS (Direct Attach Storage) devices to a Mac with Xtarget installed, then present the storage over Ethernet as iSCSI devices, which can then be shared using Xsan. Xtarget is the only software built for OS X that enables customers to inexpensively transform an Intel Mac into an iSCSI SAN storage server. Studio Network Solutions (SNS), a premier provider of post-production storage products for video and audio workgroups, today unveiled the unique capabilities of its new software product, globalSAN Xtarget Storage Server.

Though, it has external tables to use data in some specific formats stored in Amazon S3. Inheritanceįoreign data wrappers are not supported in Redshift. This may cause queries to return wrong results.ĬHECK constraints, ASSERTIONs and triggers are not supported. If there is a primary key or a UNIQUE key, COUNT(DISTINCT *) will return the same number as COUNT(*).SELECT DISTINCT pk will return the same results as SELECT pk.Instead, Redshift assumes that they are enforced by the client application, so for example: ConstraintsĬonstraints like primary key uniqueness, UNIQUE constraints and foreign keys are not enforced. Redshift allows a DISTKEY and a SORTKEY for each table (very similar to Cassandra primary keys), but there are no secondary indexes.Įven for those keys, PostgreSQL ASC and DESC options, index types, partial indexes, expressional indexes, non-key columns are not available. User-defined types, pseudo-types and domains are also not supported. Redshift does not support certain types, like: Redshift does not support the concept of extensions. As a consequence, selecting all columns ( SELECT *) or many columns causes performance penalties. Redshift stores data in a columnar fashion. Don’t try to use it for different purposes. Data analysts don’t care about such a small wait, but for an OLTP workload it would be a disaster. If a simple query that would run in less than 0.1 on PostgreSQL is run against Redshift, it could very well take 0.5 seconds, or sometimes even 1 second. However, the latency is far too high and unpredictable for OLTP workloads. LatencyĪmazon Redshift has a good throughput, and it can optimise some big queries with many joins by running them in parallel through the cluster. And since it is not open source, no one would be able to keep it alive without an agreement with the vendor. As a corner case, if Amazon’s plans change for any reason, Redshift may be retired at some point. Redshift’s future appears solid because there is interest around it, and its owner is solid. Instead, many organisations and individuals contribute to improve it and have interest in keeping it alive. One great thing about PostgreSQL is that it is not developer or owned by a company. PostgreSQL is open source, but its license does not disallow Amazon from using its codebase to build a cloud database. Redshift is not open source, nor source available. Let me stress it again: this is not meant to be a complete list. |
